  • About
    • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is considered as an under-recognized epidemic in developing countries. Diabetes mellitus and hypertension have remained as traditional risk factors, while other
emerging risk factors have not been studied extensively.
    • There is increasing burden of kidney diseases in the state of Andhra Pradesh due to diabetes, glomerular diseases, interstitial nephritis, kidney stones, prostate and renal cancers. In addition,
several environmental and occupational risk factors are proposed to contribute CKD of unknown etiology (CKDu) which is highest in AP , the incidence is ranging between 30-45% as compared to the
Indian average of 10-15 per cent, particularly in regions like Uddanam , Srikakulam, Prakasam district etc.
    • This has led to more and more people requiring dialysis and kidney transplantation. Only 3 government hospitals are catering to nephrology and urology services in the state; Kurnool, Guntur and
Andhra medical college and SIVMS Tirupati. Kidney transplants service is available only in Andhra medical college as of now.
    • Keeping in the mind of this high prevalence of CKD, glomerular disease and other kidney related problems , AIIMS Mangalagiri being the only premier institute of national importance in AP has
started the department of Nephrology with following aims:

      • To provide advanced patient care, education, and research in the field of nephrology and subspecialities
      • Strategies to prevent CKD in the primary care level
      • Strategies to increase the awareness on deceased donor transplantation

      Department Activities

      • The Dialysis Unit is currently equipped with a 30 bedded state of art facility.
      • The Unit offers Special dialysis procedures, including Hemodialysis, plasmaphersis, hemo perfusion, High cut-off (HCO) dialysis,CAPD, CRRT and SLED
      • A stat of art Kidney Transplant Unit (KTU) has been established with clean room construction to ensure sterile and controlled conditions.
      • A dedicated stat of art CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) Unit is available.
