  • About
    • The Department of Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy is a clinical, diagnostic and pharmaceutical department which caters to the needs of patient care and services..
    • The clinical aspects include management of immunohaematological disorders, stem cell transplant and the management of Hemotherapy. The department is a Hemophilia Treatment centre with multiple Hemophilia patients on Emicizumab, and also caters to the needs of Sickle cell disease, thalassemia patient management. Donor anemia management, Reactive donor clinics, hemotherapy decision making with patient blood management protocols, immunohaematology and blood transfusion clinic are in place. Regenerative therapeutic modalities like PRP, PRF, PRF scaffolds, are being researched upon with possible short term future use of BBMAC and Stem cells pending license.
    • The department performs various immunohematological tests, ranging from basic ones like blood grouping and Coombs’ test to advanced tests like paternity testing and HLA matching. It has a state-of-the-art lab that receives samples from both government and private sectors in Andhra Pradesh to resolve blood group discrepancies and detect antibodies. The department is working towards establishing a transplant immunology lab to meet national standards for organ transplantation.

    • The department provides whole human blood, blood components, and apheresis components through blood banking. The blood center has advanced facilities like washed red cells, leukodepleted red cells and platelets, and CMV negative blood components. They are upgrading to Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing, which shortens the window period for detecting HIV, Hepatitis B, and C from weeks to days. Currently, they use 4th Gen ELISA or CLIA kits for screening infectious diseases and provide free blood to patients. They also collect plasma for blood products and are working on stem cell, tissue, and organ preservation through advanced tissue banking. Once they obtain the necessary equipment, they will get licenses for Medical Products of Human Origin, including a public cord blood center, public stem cell bank, and public tissue bank to support blood and biotherapies.
    • Academics:
    • The department teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Undergraduate teaching is done through clinical postings in the 5th semester. Postgraduate teaching is done through the MD course in Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion, as well as through postings in other departments like Microbiology and Pathology. The department also collaborates with state government medical colleges and hospitals for training and research.
    • Students:
    • 1.Dr Sai Chandana P, First MD-IHBT from AIIMS, MangalagiriThe department has received approval to start UG and PG Transfusion Medicine Allied Health Courses.Out reach Activities:The department is also actively involved in training the state of Andhra Pradesh through various programmes directly organized at AIIMS or by way of Guest lectures at other workshops, conferences and CMEs.
    • Lectures delivered outside department in 2024-2525 guest lectures were delivered in the last 1 year by the faculty, in International, National, Zonal CMEs, workshops, conferences, patient awareness programmes, Live Doordarshan TV talks on various topics like- Life saving liquids, When Blood Turns Foe, Panel Discussion of Blood, BMT, organ donation awareness, Blood components- Rational use, Lacunae in diagnosis of Hemophilia, Allo Immunization in antenatal cases, Regulations of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, ONDLS, Overview of Therapeutic Apheresis, Type and Screen Vs Type and crossmatch, Immunohaematological Practices, Setting up of Hemotherapies centre, Sickle Cell disease in India, Where are we?, genetic counselling, prenatal diagnosis, preimplantation diagnosis for bleeding disorders like Hemophilia and von Willebrand disease, Hemovigilance and licensing, Latest trends in Hemophilia- Role of Emicizumab
    • Research:The department is actively involved in multiple research projects as follows
      1. A study to assess the frequency of ABO blood groups, antigens and A, B, O, and Rh(D) genes among patients at a tertiary care hospital
      2. A study to compare the effect of intra-articular platelet rich plasma vs plasma on pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers and functional outcome in patients with early osteoarthritis of knee – A Randomized double blinded cross-over placebo controlled study
      3. Efficacy of Platelet Rich Plasma augmentation of Rotator cuff Repair on postoperative functional outcome – A Prospective open field randomized control study
      4. A cohort study to assess the efficacy of Therapeutic plasma exchange in patients presenting autoimmune neurological diseases
      5. A Cross Sectional Study to Assess the Awareness on Autologous Regenerative Therapies among Medical Fraternity at a Tertiary Care Institute
      6. A study to identify severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in erythrocytes of patients suffering from coronavirus disease-19 at an Apex tertiary care institute in Andhra Pradesh, South India
      7. Comparison of various doses of platelet rich plasma injections in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome presenting as anterior knee pain
      8. Evaluating serum HMGB1 as a diagnostic biomarker for differentiating epileptic seizures from psychogenic non-epileptic seizures – A cross sectional study
