About
Since its inception in March 2019, the Department of Anesthesiology at AIIMS Mangalagiri has witnessed steady and progressive expansion in clinical services, supported by concurrent growth in faculty strength, manpower, and infrastructure. The department provides comprehensive peri-operative care to a wide range of specialties including General Surgery, Onco-surgery, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), Urology, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), and Ophthalmology, ensuring safe and high-quality anesthesia services across surgical disciplines. The institute presently houses 22 modular operation theatres equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and advanced anesthesia workstations. Two dedicated operation theatres provide exclusive round-the-clock services for emergency and trauma patients, ensuring timely and efficient surgical care. The department runs an OPD-based Pre-Anesthetic Assessment Clinic (PAC), which plays a crucial role in optimizing patients prior to surgery. The clinic is supported by point-of-care testing facilities for comprehensive pre-operative evaluation and risk stratification.
The department also delivers comprehensive Non-Operating Room Anesthesia (NORA) services in remote locations such as MRI and CT suites, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), endoscopy units, cardiac catheterization laboratory (Cath Lab), Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) suites, bronchoscopy units, and other interventional areas. These services are conducted with standardized monitoring protocols and stringent safety measures to ensure optimal peri-procedural care.
The Pain Relief Clinic (PRC) functions as a specialized unit offering both outpatient and day-care services for patients suffering from chronic pain conditions, including cancer-related pain. The clinic provides a broad spectrum of palliative care services and is equipped to perform fluoroscopy and ultrasound guided interventional pain procedures, ensuring precision-based and evidence-driven pain management.
The Department of Anesthesia manages a fully functional 23-bedded Critical Care Unit (CCU) providing comprehensive, round-the-clock care for critically ill patients. The unit is equipped with advanced life-support systems, invasive and non-invasive monitoring, mechanical ventilators, and facilities for managing complex medical and surgical emergencies. A dedicated team of anesthesiologists, critical care specialists, and trained nursing staff ensures evidence-based, multidisciplinary care with a focus on patient safety, timely intervention, and optimal clinical outcomes.
Achivements
- Role During the COVID-19 Pandemic:During the COVID-19 pandemic, the department played a central role in establishing and operationalizing the COVID ward, screening areas, and isolation facilities at the institute. It was instrumental in managing critically ill patients requiring intensive care support, including advanced respiratory and hemodynamic management.
- Academic Conferences and Skill-Based Workshops:The department has organized several national conferences, continued medical education and structured hands-on workshops in key domains of anesthesiology and critical care. These include national conferences on airway management and workshops in regional anesthesia, hemodynamic monitoring, Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), cadaveric ultrasound-guided techniques, and simulation-based training. These initiatives enhance clinical competencies and promote evidence-based practice.
- Palliative Care Outreach Services:The department conducts dedicated palliative care outreach services aimed at providing comprehensive pain relief and supportive care to patients with chronic and life-limiting illnesses. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the team delivers symptom management, counselling, and holistic patient-cantered care, extending services beyond hospital-based treatment.
- Super-Specialty Academic Programs:The department offers super-specialty training programs including DM in Pain Medicine and DM in Critical Care Medicine. These programs provide structured, competency-based training in advanced pain management and critical care practices, contributing to the development of highly skilled specialists and strengthening tertiary healthcare delivery.
- Human Anesthesia Interactive Trainer and Education Centre (HAITEC):The department has established the Human Anesthesia Interactive Trainer and Education Centre, a dedicated simulation facility for structured competency-based training. The centre provides hands-on training for undergraduate students, postgraduate residents, nursing personnel, and allied health professionals through high-fidelity simulation, skill stations, and scenario-based learning modules, thereby enhancing clinical proficiency, teamwork, crisis resource management, and patient safety practices.
- Critical Care Excellence:The 23-bedded Critical Care Unit (CCU) of the Department of Anesthesiology has consistently maintained high standards of patient care, safety, and clinical outcomes. In recognition of its performance, quality benchmarks, and multidisciplinary coordination, the CCU was conferred the Award of Excellence by the Institute for the year 2024-25. This achievement reflects the dedicated efforts of faculty, residents, nursing staff, and allied healthcare professionals in delivering advanced, protocol-driven critical care services.
Our Vision
- To cater anaesthesia services to various sub and super specialties like cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, transplant surgery, vascular surgery, hepatobiliary surgery and others in near future.
- To provide anesthesia services in out of theatre suites (MRI, CT scan, ECT, Endoscopy, Cath lab, etc) and in surgical outreach facility in community health camps.
- To start PDCC/Fellowship course in the fields of regional anesthesia and pain management very shortly. Our long-term goal is to expand these courses into other sub specialties like neuroanaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, critical care, etc and to start DM courses in these fields.
