PHYSIOLOGY

The department of Physiology has its thrust areas on Medical Education, Patient care and Research.

The department of Physiology adopts to a blended approach in imparting medical education which is open to newer concepts in medical education as well as retaining the time tested teaching learning principles. It encompasses curricular activities to balance for the different learning styles (VARK) of medical students. Practical activities, model making and reflection writings to name a few. Lays a strong emphasis on the linking of basic sciences (Physics, chemistry, Biology and Mathematics) to understand the core of many physiological phenomenon and to improve the applications of physiological principles in clinical medicine. Right from its conception, the department aims at bridging the know-do gap in medical education. The departmental practical manual and the workbook manual by faculty members adds support to the abovementioned statement.

The Department of Physiology is committed to patient care. Three state of art laboratories work for complementing the patient care activities of the Institute. Electrophysiology laboratory – Motor and sensory nerve conductions, H and F reflexes, Visual and Auditory evoked potentials, Somatosensory evoked potentials and Event related potentials. Pulmonology laboratory for spirometry studies. Autonomic function testing laboratory for heart rate variability studies (HRV), Ewing’s cardiovascular autonomic function tests (reactivity tests) and tilt table testing. Regular requests from various clinical departments are received, testings performed and interpreted by departmental faculties.

In terms of research, the department has ongoing extramural and intramural research projects to its credit. Students are encouraged every year to apply for ICMR short term student projects and they imbibe the research temperament at a very young age. The department collaborates with other clinical departments for faculty research activities and aims in bringing top class research evidence applicable to improve patient care.

Students are constantly encouraged to participate in inter institutional scientific quiz programs and they have bagged prizes to their academic credit. Departmental faculty is committed for the same making students to explore the extra Institutional scientific and academic climate which motivates them to further their academic interest.

The departmental faculties have their expertise in areas like autonomic function  testing, electrophysiology, exercise physiology, meditation and Yoga. Faculties have been regularly invited as national and international resource persons in those areas. The department regularly conducts CME programs/workshops/ webinars as a part of resource building and scientific/academic networking. Faculty members regularly publish research articles in scientific journals and present their work in national and international conferences.

In addition to, the department has regular ongoing activities for faculty and technical staffs on medical statistics, medical instrumentation including electronics, current electricity, applied mathematics and practical activities on troubleshooting. The departmental technical staffs pay regular visits to nearby foundry and machining facilities for innovations and improvements in medical instrumentation and encouraged to participate in certification programs (online) which greatly help them in operating the research and patient care laboratories as per the latest national and international guidelines and standards.
