COMMUNITY & FAMILY MEDICINE



Department of Community & Family Medicine envisions to develop compassionate, high quality medical professionals and deliver outstanding health care to all with special emphasis on those most vulnerable through excellent medical education with special emphasis on those most vulnerable and comprehensive healthcare. Aim is to Instill core values viz.
Leadership, Innovation, Excellence, and Empathy among all students. The Department became functional in the Institute initiation year, in 2018, with the objective of early exposure of medical students to the community. Department of Community & Family Medicine is a clinical pivotal unit in complementing and reinforcing the manifesto of AIIMS, institute of national importance by setting exemplary standards in quality teaching, training & research. The faculty have rich experience & exposure to academics, applied and field research with good publication credentials.

The Department faculty comprises of one Professor, one Additional Professor, one Associate Professor and three Assistant Professors. There are two senior residents and two tutors.

A well-researched UG teaching & training curriculum dedicated to provide excellence in medical education, research, training, and highest standard of clinical care to community is followed in the department. The pedagogy includes innovative learning modules essentially with practice & demonstration sessions, on-field practicums in project & community based initiatives, PLA, community ownership etc.

Highlights of the Department
Faculty
The faculty have rich experience in academics, applied and field research with good publication credentials and research output.
Faculty has wide academic interest they have contributed to the Text Book of Community Medicine of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) as Editor, author and reviewers; and have published practical books in Community Medicine and also for MOHFW. Faculty are on the Editorial board of many reputed journals such as Indian Journal of Community Health, Health Line etc. At AIIMS, faculty are actively contributing to Institute development in various capacities. Professor and HoD is the Medical Superintendent of AIIMS Hospital. Additional Professor is the Head of Information Technology. All faculty are members of various institutional committees and are resource persons in technical trainings.

Undergraduate Teaching
A well-researched Undergraduate teaching and training curriculum dedicated to provide excellence in medical education, research, training, and highest standard of clinical care to community is followed in the Department. The pedagogy includes innovative learning modules essentially with practice and demonstration sessions, on-field practicals in project and community based initiatives, PLA, community ownership etc.
Early clinical exposure to students- Early clinical exposure is a newer concept in the undergraduate teaching. Department of CFM has provided early clinical exposure to undergraduate students from Semester-I itself. MBBS students participate actively in events of public health importance and health camps organized by the Department. The students are also being trained to conduct the Family Health Advisory Services and community Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation in Rural and urban slum areas of Mangalagiri.

Community Services
Since its inception, the Department has conducted more than 20 health education and awareness activities during days of public health importance (World AIDS Day, World TB Day, World Cancer Day, World Diabetes Day etc.). It has also conducted several health camps across all sections of society such as pensioners, weavers, food handlers, and slum area residents. On Swacchata Pakhwada fortnight, health and hygiene awareness sessions were held for construction and sanitation workers in AIIMS campus, and for school going children in the community. CFM also works actively in occupational safety. The Department has vaccinated institute staff including faculty, students and ancillary staff with Hepatitis B vaccine. The department organized training program on biomedical waste management for doctors, nursing staff, laboratory personnel and housekeeping staff.
The department is in the process of establishing model Rural Health Training Centre and Urban Health Training Centre.

Patient care
CFM Department runs daily Family Medicine OPD in AIIMS Hospital with the aim to provide comprehensive healthcare comprising preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative care using evidence based treatment protocols. Adult Immunization services are also being provided. This includes immunization against Hepatitis B, Tetanus; adult vaccines; anti rabies vaccine etc. Non Communicable Disease clinic is also operational. Preventive oncology clinics and Occupational Health clinics are on the agenda.

Research
Department faculty has expertise in research projects of international and National repute, presently Department has many National level approved projects from ICMR and DHR in the field of Health system research. Research proposals submitted by faculty on malaria, dengue, community ophthalmology (cataract) and occupation health submitted to Department of Health Research, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have been shortlisted and/or selected for funding.
Under the guidance of department faculty, MBBS student successfully completed research project awarded by ICMR Short-Term Studentship Program 2019.

Capacity Building (Trainings): Faculty is trained in varied areas operational research, Tuberculosis, Geriatric, adolescent and maternal health areas.
