SURGICAL GASTROENTEROLOGY



The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at AIIMS Mangalagiri has been initiated recently and the OPD was started from 21-02-2022.The Department is currently functioning with one Associate Professor. The primary aim of the Department is to provide specialized quality surgical care especially for complex gastrointestinal diseases to the patients in this region of the country at an affordable cost. Along with this, the Department aims to conduct basic and clinical research in the field of Surgical Gastroenterology and provide specialised training to doctors as well as nursing personnel. The Department has the objective of growing into a model for Surgical Gastroenterology departments which will inspire young doctors and provide quality patient care.

The core area of interest of this Department, as it stands now, is in the field of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery(HPB); with special emphasis on HPB malignancies. Other specific areas of interest include management of bile duct injuries/biliary strictures, intrahepatic stone disease, chronic and acute pancreatitis, and management of portal hypertension. Apart from HPB, the Department also will be focusing on Upper GI disorders. Diagnostic procedures like upper and lower GI endoscopies will be performed in the Department.

Both laparoscopic and Robotic surgeries will be performed in the Department in due course.

Collaboration with Medical Gastroenterology, Radiology (Gastro-radiology) and Nuclear Medicine will form an integral part of multidisciplinary management.

Special Clinics like HPB clinic, Stoma Clinic, Bariatric Clinic will be started in due course.

Liver transplant program will come into existence as the Department grows further with increase in manpower and infrastructure.

The Department plans to have a dedicated GI nutritionist(to strengthen the area of clinical nutrition, an important area which does not get the attention it deserves),Stoma care nurse, Transplant counsellor/coordinator and Medical Social Worker.

The Department also plans to start postdoctoral program(MCh) in Surgical Gastroenterology and HPB fellowship program with further growth in manpower and infrastructure.

The Department will organize CMEs, Certificate courses and conferences not only for junior doctors and surgeons in adjoining areas, but also for training of nursing personnel in areas like stoma care and wound care.
