SURGICAL ONCOLOGY

SURGICAL ONCOLOGY

Department of Surgical Oncology

The Department of Surgical Oncology was established in August 2021. The department envisions to provide evidence-based state-of-the-art care to patients with cancer and to collaborate and conduct quality research in various aspects of cancer. We work as a team with Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiology, Pathology, Nuclear Medicine and Burns & Plastic Surgery to provide comprehensive cancer care to all the patients. We strive hard to provide up-to-date management of all cancers with the current protocols and guidelines which are the standard of care across the country.

The department has currently one faculty. The outpatient department (OPD) and operative (OT) services have begun at the hospital.

OPD

We at OPD are catering for currently 100 patients in a month, that include 60 new patients. The patient number is expected to increase exponentially after the establishment of the inpatient block and OT complex.

Operating Work

The department caters for the following types of cancer cases.

        1. Head and Neck Oncology
        2. Gynec- Oncology
        3. Breast Oncology and Reconstructive surgery
        4. Soft tissue sarcomas
        5. GI Oncology (Includes Pancreas/ Upper GI/ retroperitoneum and Colorectal Oncology)
        6. Uro-Oncology
        7. Thoracic Oncology

Academic

We are also involved in the teaching of undergraduate (MBBS) on the oncology related topics.

Awareness Programmes

As a part of the programme, we are in collaboration with Department of General Surgery, and Radiotherapy for creating awareness on breast cancer. We have organised talks with women organisations to empower them with knowledge on breast cancer and early detection. We have also involved the ASHA workers to take this screening of breast cancer from the stage to door-to-door campaign. We continue to provide opportunistic screening to all eligible patients attending OPD services at the department.

Research and Conferences

We are keen to collaborate and conduct quality research with other Institutes in various aspects of cancer. We encourage students to participate in research and present them in esteemed conferences.

Future prospects:

We shall also start subspecialties cancer clinics like Breast Oncology, Head and Neck Oncology, Gynec-Oncology, GI Oncology for providing specialised care for the patients and develop focussed research.

We would want to upscale the surgeries to include minimally invasive surgeries, and start HIPEC, PIPEC and Robotics.

We would also start Mch Surgical Oncology/ fellowships/ observerships in various sub-specialities like head and neck cancer, Gynec-oncology after the volume of patients increase and senior faculty make way in the department.
